App - MacUtil

MacUtil is a small native macOS menu-bar app that bundles the utilities you would otherwise install five separate tools for: Rectangle-style window snapping, a Cmd-Tab switcher with live thumbnails, voice-to-text dictation, optional AI writing help, and instant screenshot-to-clipboard. Open source, notarized, and free.

Overview

MacUtil grew out of a simple annoyance: getting a Mac to behave the way we want takes a stack of small utilities, each with its own menu-bar icon, its own updater, and its own subscription. MacUtil replaces that stack with one native app.

It is written in Swift against AppKit, Carbon hotkeys, the Accessibility APIs, ScreenCaptureKit, Speech, and IOKit — with no third-party package dependencies. The first public release shipped in June 2026 as a Developer ID signed, notarized DMG, with the full source on GitHub.

Key features

  • Window snapping Rectangle-style halves, quarters, thirds, and maximize via keyboard shortcuts, plus drag-to-edge previews and move-to-next-display.

  • Cmd-Tab window switcher Replaces the system switcher with live ScreenCaptureKit thumbnails, app icons, mouse selection, and close/quit commands without leaving the switcher.

  • Voice-to-text Dictate straight into the focused app, using SpeechAnalyzer on macOS 26 and falling back to the older Speech APIs below that.

  • Real-time writing help Optional OpenRouter-powered spelling, grammar, and rewrite suggestions shown as inline underlines with compact correction cards. Password fields, credential apps, and password managers are excluded by design.

  • Screenshot to clipboard Native macOS screenshots land on the clipboard immediately, while keeping the usual floating thumbnail and file-saving behavior.

  • Logitech device helper DPI controls, gesture-button Mission Control, and side-button actions for supported HID++ mice.

  • Quality-of-life extras Command-Shift-Q that quits apps without visible windows, launch-at-login, live permission status, and opt-in daily update checks.
